What the levels mean
| Level | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Normal | Within the usual range for this time of year. |
| Watch | Higher than on 9 days in 10 at this time of year. Keep an eye on official updates. |
| Warning | Higher than on 19 days in 20. Get ready to move people, animals and valuables. |
| Danger | Higher than on 99 days in 100. Keep away from the river and follow district orders. |
Levels compare today's model flow with the same place's 1997–2025 record for the same dates. They are not the official CWC warning and danger levels, which are water heights at gauges. In the dry season a high level for the date can still be well below flood flow; each river line says how close it is to a typical yearly flood.
What to do
Before a flood
- Ignore rumours. Follow the district administration, IMD and CWC.
- Keep phones charged and emergency alerts switched on. Use SMS if calls fail.
- Pack an emergency kit: drinking water, dry food, medicines, torch, documents in a waterproof bag.
- Know the nearest shelter or raised pucca building and the safe route to it.
- Untie cattle and other animals so they can move to safety.
During a flood
- Move to higher ground when told to, or sooner if water is rising fast.
- Switch off electricity and gas. Do not touch electrical equipment when wet.
- Do not walk or drive through moving water. If you must walk, use a stick to test the ground.
- Keep away from drains, culverts, electric poles and fallen wires.
- Drink boiled or chlorinated water and eat freshly cooked or dry food.
After a flood
- Go home only when officials say it is safe.
- Keep children out of flood water.
- Do not use electrical goods that got wet until they are checked.
- Throw away food that touched flood water. Watch for snakes.
- Do not drink tap water until health officials say it is safe.

Crossing the river by boat
- Do not cross when the river is in flood, rising fast, or at night.
- Do not cross in strong wind, heavy rain, thunder or thick fog.
- Everyone wears a life jacket. Never overload the boat.
- Follow ghat closures and instructions from the police and the district administration.
Trinetra advice, based on the same checks Varuna uses for boat units: river level, wind, rain, visibility and daylight.
