How high each border river is today, how likely it is to rise, and when a boat can cross.
18 points on the Brahmaputra, Ganga and Padma, Teesta, Torsa, Mahananda, Ichamati, Kushiyara, Feni, Haora, Jinjiram, Raimangal, Sutlej and Ravi, each compared every day with 29 years of its own record. For water-wing and boat units, district disaster authorities, and the villages on the banks.
Border rivers rise fast and move. On 10 September 2026 the Ganga at Manikchak in Malda stood about 75 cm above its extreme danger level and nearly 3 lakh people were affected (UNI, The Statesman). Assam's floods from 19 July killed about 100 people by 10 August (Mongabay).
Official forecasts are built around gauges. CWC runs 360 flood forecasting stations; its station inundation forecasts cover 38 of them, one in Assam and none in West Bengal, Tripura or Punjab, with all stations planned by 2027 (CWC, May 2026). Boat units and ferry ghats still decide every day whether to cross, mostly on local judgement.
- Shows each point's discharge today against the same date in 1997–2025, as a level: NormalWatchWarningDanger
- Gives the chance, from 51 forecast runs, that a river reaches each level in the next 7 and 30 days, plus a seasonal outlook to about six months.
- Ranks this monsoon's peak against every season since 1997 and shows today's flow as a share of the 2-year flood, so a high lean-season reading is not mistaken for a flood.
- Marks every hour of the next 72 as Go, Caution or No-go for small-boat crossings, from river level, gusts, rain, fog, thunderstorms and daylight.
- Flags heavy rain in the 16-day forecast with IMD's categories.
- Publishes a free, plain-language flood page by district, with NDMA advice and short lines in Bengali, Assamese, Hindi and Punjabi.
- Find the riverSearch a grid of 5.5 km GloFAS cells around each town and pick the cell on the main channel.
- Learn the normalPool 29 years of daily flow within 7 days either side of each date; take the 90th, 95th and 99th percentiles.
- Read the forecastCompare 51 ensemble runs with those thresholds, day by day, for 30 days.
- Check the weatherHourly gusts, rain, visibility, storms and daylight at the river for 72 hours.
- PublishConsole board, river point pages, crossing strips and the public flood page. Every number carries its source and time.
The full method, with formulas, thresholds, checks against the 2024 Haora, 2025 Ravi and 2026 Ganga floods, and known failure modes, is in the public methods note and, with live retrieval times and the cell-search grids, on the console's methods page.

Nothing in Varuna is simulated. CWC gauge feeds are not public from our network today; with a data agreement they would replace model levels where a gauge exists.
- Water wings and boat units: which stretches to patrol, and which hours to cross.
- District disaster management authorities: which rivers to watch this week, and how this season compares with past ones.
- Border villages: a plain answer to "is the river rising?", with what to do and who to call.
- Advisory only. Every page names CWC, IMD, NDMA and district administrations as the authorities to follow.
- Every number shows its source and retrieval time; a failed fetch keeps the last good export and marks it stale.
- Places and conditions only. Varuna holds no data about people.
- The public flood page is free, has no sign-in, and works on a basic phone browser.
- The method is published, with its checks and its failures.
- All discharge is modelled. Absolute values can be far off on small rivers: in the August 2024 Haora flood the model reached only 21 m³/s, though its level still read Danger for the date.
- Dams and barrages on the Teesta, Ganga, Sutlej and Ravi are approximated; release notices come first.
- Tides and storm surge are not modelled at Basirhat, Hasnabad and Raimangal.
- Levels are statistical, not CWC danger levels. Crossing windows screen weather and flow; they do not clear a crossing.
- The free Open-Meteo API is for non-commercial use. A deployment needs a subscription or a self-hosted copy.
