Before you go to sea

English

  1. Check the IMD fishermen warning for your coast. If IMD advises fishermen not to go to sea, stay in harbour.
  2. Know where the boundary is. Crossing the India–Sri Lanka, India–Bangladesh or India–Maldives line, or going near Sir Creek where no line is agreed, can lead to arrest and the loss of your boat.
  3. Carry a life jacket for everyone, a working GPS, a radio or phone, and the distress alert transmitter if your boat has one.
  4. Tell someone ashore where you are going and when you will return.
  5. In an emergency at sea, call the Coast Guard on 1554 (toll free) or 112.
  6. This page is for awareness only. It is not for navigation.

Lines are drawn from the 1974 and 1976 India–Sri Lanka agreements, the 1976 India–Maldives agreement and the 2014 India–Bangladesh arbitral award. The old agreements do not state a GPS datum, so their positions can differ from GPS by tens to hundreds of metres. Keep well away from any line. Sources and checks.
